Remodel vs. Renovation. What’s the Difference?

“Hey honey, we should definitely do a remodel!” he says. “Okay!” You respond. But then you stare off into space, thinking about that tv show you watched last night. And then you think… “But I thought it was called a renovation???”

Ha! This would not be the first time this has happened. And why? To tell you the truth, I don’t know. Maybe the term “renovation” has been over used on HGTV and “remodel” was tossed to the side because it sounded less sexy. Maybe it’s a Canadian thing. Who knows.

Either way, there is a difference and I’m here to finally settle the debate, to explain the difference between a renovation and a remodel. Because we just can’t go on like this!

Long story short, a renovation is a situation where you’re demolishing a certain part of the home, and then you’re putting it all back together using new materials and finishes. And here’s the kicker – the big differentiator. You’re doing it using the same, pre-existing footprint/floorplan.

There it is! Then, naturally – this means that a remodel is a little more extensive. A remodel is when you do all of the above, the same as a renovation, except you’re changing the floorplan.

Maybe you want to reorient the kitchen, or put the bathroom where the closet was. Maybe you want to blow out the wall between the kitchen and the living room to join the way of the future (yes, open concept is here to stay and it’s life changing).

Either way, a remodel is a situation where you extensively alter the floorplan from what was pre-existing before you got started.

Now, which one is better? That’s entirely up to you. This depends on a lot. It depends on your budget, your needs for specific timelines, and your other individual desires.

Either way, SteveBuilt does both! We love helping clients in St. Catharines, Niagara Falls, Niagara On The Lake and other surrounding Niagara Region areas.

A renovation or remodel can really increase the value of your home, and give you the quality of life that maybe you’ve been craving for years.
